Petter Sundkvist is today one of the most sought after Swedish conductors. In addition to the Swedish orchestras, he has conducted symphony orchestras throughout the Nordic countries, Great Britain, Germany, Italy, Holland, Russia, Croatia and Slovakia.
During the last decade, he has been principal conductor or principal guest conductor with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra and Norrbotten Chamber Orchestra/Norrbotten NEO, where he was the artistic director until 2012. He was Principal Conductor for the chamber orchestra Musica Vitae 2004–2007, with the orchestra he toured Spain and the United States.
Petter Sundkvist devotes a lot of his time to contemporary music and has conducted more than 100 premier performances by Nordic composers. He has also conducted around fifteen productions in the Swedish opera houses as well as more than a dozen chamber opera productions.
The record company Naxos awarded him a leading position in a comprehensive recording series devoted to Swedish music. In particular the recordings with music by Stenhammar with the Royal Scottish National Orchestra and Joseph Martin Kraus with the Swedish Chamber Orchestra have been much acclaimed in international press. In these recordings, Petter Sundkvist explores the modern orchestra's possibilities for time-honored playing - something that is also reflected in his work with music by Haydn, Mozart and Beethoven. The first album with music by Kraus was awarded the prestigious Cannes Classical Award in 1999. Alongside the numerous Naxos recordings, Petter Sundkvist's discography also includes recordings at BIS, Caprice, Swedish Society, DaCapo and Phono Suecia with, among others, the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra and the Gothenburg Symphony. In 2016, Petter was supervisor in workshops with Edsbjergs Ensemble. Petter has conducted the Navy's Music Corps and the Army's Music Corps with a mixed classical repertoire and to this day he is frequently engaged and in demand with both of them. To name a few more engagements, Petter has been involved in the Klang-Festival in Copenhagen with Norrbotten NEO & Per Mårtensson in 2018, Composer Festival with Benjamin Staern 2022 etc.
Petter Sundkvist also devotes himself to teaching and in 2002 he was appointed Professor at the Luleå University of Technology – School of Music in Piteå. In May 2015 it was announced that Petter Sundkvist has been elected as member of the The Royal Swedish Academy of Music.
